Board Hopes New Tryouts Will End Cheer Controversy

SOUTHLAKE (CBS 11 News) ― After discussions that lasted into the early morning, Carroll School District board members announced the original members of the varsity cheerleading team will remain while the additional 18 who auditioned the first time will need to compete for slots again.

The school board met Monday night to address the cheerleading controversy that has plagued the state's top football school.

Parents voiced concerns that 18 members of the squad were allowed on the team despite not passing the skills test.

Some of the original 14 members and their parents believed most didn't measure up to the high standards.

The school board voted to keep the 14 girls who initially passed the agility test and hold a second tryout for the other girls.

Jessica Simmons, who originally made the squad, was satisfied with the vote.

"I think that's it's fair to both sides," Simmons said. "They get a second chance to try out."

Simmons said she realizes some of those who will tryout again may make it to the squad and that's fine with her.

A date for the new tryouts has not been announced.
