LEWISVILLE (CBS 11 News) ―
A place where children play is now at the center of an arson investigation. Police say someone torched a playground in the community of Castle Hills - located just outside of Lewisville.
News about fire spread fast through the community. Many of the residents say they're devastated by the loss of playground equipment, but are also saddened to learn the blaze may have been intentionally set.
"I would like to think that Castle Hills is a very safe place to live. Unfortunately, in the world there are just some crazy people out there," said Lewisville resident Lorna Gunnersen.
Area children also shared their feelings with CBS 11 News.
"I really like the monkey bars too but, now that's messed up so what am I going to do?" said eight-year-old Stephen Fagot. His brother, 10-year-old Chris, said "Now it's destroyed. And especially that part [the swinging equipment], we loved that part the most."
The Lewisville Fire Department arrived at the scene on Stoney Passage Lane around 1:30 a.m. The equipment was ablaze as well as the grass of a neighboring house.
Fire crews were able to contain the flames, preventing the destruction of the entire playground and damage to nearby houses.
Police say a mounted surveillance camera records all activity at the playground. Arson investigators hope to learn more about how the fire started after they review the video.
