Thief Shot & Killed In Cedar Hill Driveway
CEDAR HILL (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A North Texas homeowner shot and killed a thief Friday morning, but isn't expected to face police charges.
The incident happened in the 900 block of Sleepy Hollow in Cedar Hill.
According to officials with the Cedar Hill Police Department, the homeowner heard his car alarm go off just after 7 a.m. It was then the man realized someone was breaking into his car.
"The homeowner, when he realized someone was breaking into his vehicle, called the police. And then he grabbed his own weapon and went outside and confronted the person who was breaking into his vehicle and shot him," explained Cedar Hill Police Department Spokesperson Corky Brown.
A passerby called 911 after hearing and seeing something suspicious. During the emergency call the man said, 'I heard three gunshots and I seen him start rolling, he was rolling down a hill. Now he's at the bottom of the hill, face down'.
A next door neighbor told CBS 11 News that she heard gunshots. "I feel like it took guts to do that," neighbor Kelly Houk said. "I'm sure he didn't go to bed thinking 'tomorrow morning I'm gonna wake up and go outside and shoot a complete stranger'.
When officers arrived at the home they found the thief dead.
Police say the homeowner has been questioned twice, so far, and there are no plans to charge the man with any crime.
Officers say the homeowner, who asked not to be identified, is traumatized and afraid of retaliation. "I feel kind of sorry for him," Houk said.
As of Friday evening the thief had not been identified.
