Highland Park May Ban Cell Phones For Drivers
by Steve Pickett
HIGHLAND PARK (CBS 11 News) ―
You could soon be placed on hold if you're using a cell phone while driving through the town of Highland Park. Elected leaders are now considering a town ordinance that would disconnect callers using cell phones in designated areas.
Police officers in Highland Park have been dealing with complaints from angry residents about the increase in heavy traffic. According to the police, one of the problems is drivers who are more focused on phone calls rather than children crossing the street.
"A lot of the parents taking these kids to school," said Darrell Fant of the Highland Park DPS, "they're being distracted, and a large majority are talking on cell phones."
The ordinance would ban handheld cell phones from use in school zones. If the ordinance is approved, drivers would still be able to use their phones with a hands-free device.
Parents at Highland Park's Armstrong Elementary School on Thursday were split on the issue.
"People that are coming to pick up their kids that are driving around this immediate block are on the lookout for kids, even if they're perhaps on their phone," said Jill Giddens.
"Most people know, if you need to use your phone, you're not driving or you're stationary," said Kim Miller. "I mean, they prefer you, probably, not to talk on your phone anyway when you're going to pick up your kids. But sometimes, you have to take a phone call."
"I think, in general, parents here drive very responsibly. So, I don't see a big problem," said Karen Kliewer. "I just, in general, think that cell phones are not a good idea in the car."
This ordinance is still in the discussion stages right now. It must first be approved by another committee and then the full town council. It could be in effect as early as December 1.
