Dallas Cement Truck Accident Leaves 1 Dead

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― A cement truck crashed on top of a car and a motorcycle on Friday afternoon in Dallas, resulting in one fatality.

The accident happened along northbound I-35E, near the intersection of Highway 183, near Texas Stadium.

According to police in Dallas, the cement truck was trying to avoid another vehicle in the southbound lanes. The truck flipped over the median and into northbound traffic, striking the motorcycle first.

Officials shut down both highways while fire and rescue crews were on the scene to determine if there were any survivors and clean up the mess. Debris and liquid could be seen on both sides of the highway. The highway closures created major traffic backups in all directions.

Chopper 11 was flying over the scene of the major accident and saw the cement truck on its passenger side, with its rear sitting on top of the driver side of a red SUV. Various motorcycle parts were scattered around on the ground nearby.

The cement truck had spilled a portion of its load onto the ground, the SUV and the victims.

Chopper 11 also watched as crews separated the two larger vehicles from each other, removed the roof of the SUV and took away one victim, a child, on a stretcher.

CBS 11 News reporter Marianne Martinez said that crews on the scene were not rushing through the rescue operation. They were taking their time, making very deliberate actions, in order to better ensure the safety of those victims who needed assistance.

The 41-year-old driver of the SUV died. She has been identifed as Maria Gamez. The child, 6-year-old Angelica Gamez, was taken from the SUV to Children's Medical Center at Dallas in critical condition.

The 31-year-old driver of the cement truck has been identified as Edward Magallon. The 34-year-old motorcycle driver has been identified as Miguel Gutierrez. They are both at local hospitals in serious condition.
