A Plano teenager died Thursday from a Staph infection. On Friday officials confirmed the death was not from the much talked about 'superbug' MRSA.
Chad Jeter Jr. attended T.H. Williams High School in Plano. The 15-year-old played outside linebacker on the 10th grade football team.
Officials with Collin County Health Care Services say there is no evidence that the teen's infection was associated with school activities, or that he exposed other students to Staph.
A friend described Jeter as a good guy who recently fell in love with skateboarding. The teen recently cut his knee while skateboarding, but didn't think much of it.
Experts say washing your hands and wounds are both easy ways to avoid problems with Staph infections.
"It may invade the bloodstream and it may be several days later that one may appear with a serious infection," says Dr. Jane Siegel with UT Southwestern and Children's Medical Center Dallas.
Parents are being warned that Staph infections can migrate to different parts of the body and cause problems in areas unrelated to the infected wound.
"We expect parents to recognize, 'something's not right', and to seek help," Siegel said.
Jeter is being described as, 'a great guy who made everyone smile'. A candlelight vigil for the teen is to be held at Williams High Friday evening.
