Grand Prairie Neighborhood Fights Gas Drilling
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Natural gas rigs are becoming a common sight across North Texas. But the payout is not enough to get some residents on board in Grand Prairie.
Many residents say, in an effort to keep their neighborhoods safe, they want to keep drilling out.
If you look outside in the front yard of Villa Pierce there is no question about how she feels about gas drilling in her neighborhood. There are signs that read, 'No Drilling in Westchester'.
According to the homeowners association a majority of the 200 residents who live in the Westchester Valley neighborhood are against drilling.
"There's a small majority of people that don't want it to happen," said
Cherokee Horn Productions leases the land where the drilling in the Barnett Shale will take place. According to the land manager, Brad Bean, the drilling will take place at Camp Wisdom and Robinson.
"We have acreage to the east of the Westchester Valley community that we've already leased," says Bean. "There's a number of acres. There's well over 200 acres that are already leased. Now the question is whether Westchester Valley wants to take part of that."
The outcome may mean a new neighborhood for Pierce. "If the drilling takes place and they're gonna go underneath our home, I'm really considering moving my family out of the neighborhood," she says.
According to Cherokee Horn Productions, there are currently some 33-percent of residents in Westchester Valley and surrounding neighborhoods that have given the drilling the okay.
