City Services Close For Furloughs, Holiday Weekend
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
There are a lot of locked doors and secured gates all over Dallas as the city enters into the 4th of July weekend.
The City of Dallas considered Friday a holiday and Monday, July 6 is the day set aside for civilian employees to be furloughed.
Many say the closed pools around the city are kind of strange on a hot July day. It makes the day a little too quiet.
From Friday until Monday all recreation centers in Dallas are closed. Expect nearly the same at city public libraries.
The Hampton Illinois Branch Library typically has hundreds of patrons, but not Friday. One car after another drove into the parking lot and drove out once they realized the library was closed.
Young patron Joshua Morrow loves the library. "I like to read like harry potter books and magie tree house books."
For Carmen Ortiz, the library is a necessity. "I came back to see if it, maybe opened at 9 or 10 but no, it's closed."
She doesn't have a computer at home and depends on the computers at the public library.
"Well I have four children I got to support so, yeah, I'm looking for a job."
The spray parks are open and operating, but city recreation centers are closed through Monday.
A local swim team was able to get a little time in on Friday, but four of the city swimming pools were closed Friday and five other pools will be closed Monday due to city worker furloughs. All city pools will be open on July 4 and 5, City officials do say to call your local pool to check operating hours.
Grauwyler, Jaycee, Kid Springs, Bonnie View and Glendale pools are the five that will be closing Monday and reopening Tuesday. The pools will be closed because there will be no life guards on duty.
"I think it's sad because we were thinking about swimming on this holiday. She doesn't have day car. I don't have work. We were going to hang out by the pool but apparently not. That's not good. People are hot."
The Garcia family says they'll head for their apartment pool. Carmen Ortiz says her job search will just have to wait.
Uncomfortable inconveniences when a lot of people are looking for nearby places to cool off.
The city of Dallas has a list of services and programs that will be closed for the long holiday weekend.
