PD: Witness Foils Lewisville Bank Robbery Attempt

LEWISVILLE (CBS 11 News) ―

Thanks to an alert bystander police in Lewisville say a morning bank robbery was foiled.

Just after 9 a.m. Jesse Sustaita was on his way to a sales call when he noticed something suspicious. Sustaita called 911 and reported seeing an armed man walking toward the Compass Bank, at 484 E. Round Grove Road, wearing a ski mask.

"I thought that was very odd, ya know, in the middle of the day having a ski mask. It looked very hot, [it was a] very thick ski mask," he said.

Officers say when they arrived at the bank they found 33-year-old Robert Kerrick outside, armed with a pistol.

"I was so amazed that I actually saw a gun behind his back. I thought it was just somebody playing around, but obviously they discovered that it was a real gun," Sustaita said.

Kerrick was taken into custody without incident and no one at the bank was harmed.

If the alleged caper had succeeded it would have been the first bank robbery in Lewisville in 2008.

"I just can't say enough praises for Jesse and uh, and he did everything exactly right," said Lewisville Police Department Capt. Todd Taylor.

Police believe Kerrick intended to rob the bank and have charged him with Criminal Attempt Aggravated Robbery.
