Dallas Task Force Tackles Convenience Store Crime

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Overnight, Dallas police say someone tried to steal an ATM machine from a 7-Eleven store. The crime is the latest in a series of attempted robberies/robberies at convenience stores. A new Dallas task force is now working to come up with a plan to put a stop to the crimes.

In the past four years Dallas police have responded to more than 6,300 convenience store crimes.

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert formed a task force in hopes of curbing the problem.

Friday the convenience store task force recommended –

-Stores register with the Dallas Police Department
-Safety training for convenience store managers and employees
-Store displaying 'No Trespassing' and 'No Loitering' signs

It was business as usual Friday at C-Store #11 on Maham Road in Dallas. But it hasn't always been that way. On July 9, 2007, two men burst into the store. One man pulled out a gun while the other raced to the cash register.

Just 24 hours later the store was robbed again. The same clerk was behind the counter and the same two suspects were committing the crime. "It is pretty hard for the clerk," explained store manager Ansar Qayum. "Especially at night, it's hard to find a night guy. They always get scared."

The list of task force recommendations has not been finalized by the Dallas City Attorney.

Task force co-chair Lt. Michael Pendleton says the cost of implementing the recommendations could be up to $2,000 per convenience store.
