Copper Thieves Hit Dallas Church 3 Times In 1 Week

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Copper theft is become more and more common in North Texas.

Dallas city officials say copper thefts are up more than 200 percent from 2005 to 2007.

The Transvision International Church building is unusable after thieves struck three times in one week. The church had to temporarily move to a local hotel because of the lack of air conditioning.

Despite security precautions, thieves managed to strip power lines going into the church and at its switchbox.

Last week, Dallas city officials finalized plans to make it harder to sell stolen copper, requiring id cards, thumb prints and digital photos of future transactions.
