Headstones Vandalized At Collin County Cemetery
By Arezow Doost
COLLIN COUNTY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A North Texas historic cemetery is vandalized. Investigators with the Collin County Sheriff's Department sat more than 30 headstones at the Cottage Hill Cemetery were damaged and smashed to pieces.
The cemetery is near Celina, down a country road in Collin County.
"We started in 1888," explained Cottage Hill Cemetery Association member Randy Grumbles.
Grumbles parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles are all buried at the cemetery. He says he's heartbroken after what the vandals left behind.
Lynda Stambaugh is also disturbed. "I've got two older aunts here and my dad and granddad are on the west end," she said.
The vandals knocked over and broke dozens of headstones. "It's awfully disrespectful," Grumbles said. "Some of these are over 100 years old and see them knocked over it's not showing much respect for the dead."
According to Grumbles, the granite headstones can withstand pretty much anything, but the marble ones break easily.
Cemetery board members think a group of people are involved, because they say some of the headstones are too heavy for one person to have turned over.
The board says it will cost around $2,000 to upright the overturned headstones and fix those that were broken. "It's a labor of love. We try as best we can to keep it maintained," Stambaugh said.
The Cottage Hill Cemetery board has put up a $500 reward for anyone with information about the vandalism. If you know who is responsible call the Collin County Sheriff's Office at 972-547-5350.
