Look Forward To, But Be Wary Of, Cyber Monday

HURST (CBS 11 News) ―

Katie Runyan doesn't shop online frequently, but she's generally happy with the results when she does.

"It's nice when I couldn't find something in the store that I wanted and I could find it online."

Travis Wright prefers it.  "When I have money I do.  Mom doesn't approve of it but I try to do most of my shopping online if I do any at all."

Today, he's searching for concert tickets as he relaxes at the Seekers Coffee House in Hurst.

Online retailers need more people like Travis and Katie, since consumer spending in general is down.  This year, look for online bargains and free shipping.

But, pitfalls abound.  John Riggins with Fort Worth's Better Business Bureau warns against using a site that demands advanced fees.  "Know who you're doing business with and how long they've been in business; get a Better Business Bureau report on the company."

Travis Wright cautions to scan the fine print for surprise billings.  "Make sure you read the user agreement and check your statement after you print it off, make sure you trust who you're giving your credit card number to."

And, if you're someone who wants to shop from work remember, it's the company's computer and you are on company time.  "Understand that you're on somebody else's equipment and typically everything you're doing is readable stuff" reminds John Riggins.

But, if you play it safe and smart, it's always fun to get that good deal.
