Math Teachers Wanted In The DISD
by Steve Pickett
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
The 'help wanted' sign is still hanging at the Dallas Independent School District. The district is currently trying to recruit people willing to teach math, but is finding it challenging.
Naturally, for children to acquire adequate skills they need someone to teach those skills.
Brent Hugg says he needed a change and the Dallas school district needed him.
Hugg is a first year teacher, a former accounting firm employee, now guiding W. T. White High School students through algebra class. "I tried the accounting thing in Arkansas, I didn't like it," he said.
Hugg is a teacher with no teaching degree - exactly what the Dallas school district wants more of.
Hugg's grasp and foundation in math made him a classic candidate as a student for the DISD's Alternative Certification Program.
The school districts demand for more math and science teachers is fed with the training of people through the alternative certification program.
"Because there's not enough supply of math teachers going to regular teaching programs, we gotta go out and seek," said Hector Flores, Dallas Independent School District.
The DISD is seeking 25 more people like Hugg by October.
Potential candidates would be individuals with a college degree, a math background, and a willingness to become students themselves in order to teach. Potential teachers must take classes, while they teach classes.
