DISD: 2nd Grader Brings Gun To School

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A shocking discovery was made at a local elementary after a gun was brought to school by a second grader.

Officials with the Dallas Independent School District say it placed Bushman Elementary School on Bonnie View Lane on lockdown Thursday morning after they discovered the gun.

Some mothers say they're upset the school didn't contact parents after it happened around 10:30 a.m.

The school district says as is standard procedure, it sent a letter home with students, letting parents know what happened.

No one was hurt.

Administrators say police responded quickly and confiscated the gun from the boy's locker.

The school district is asking parents to keep guns out of their students' reach and to remind children about the dangers of playing with guns.

Some of the mothers who spoke with CBS 11 News said they think elementary schools should have metal detectors.
