Dallas County: 3 'Probable' Swine Flu Cases

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Dallas County Health Officials say three probable cases of swine flu have popped up in the county.

Health officials say the three newly discovered cases don't require a quarantine or even hospitalization, but they are assessing risks.

The ages of the unidentified victims are 24 and 7 years old, and 3 months old.  Health officials came to the Turimex bus station near the Dallas Zoo to instruct operators in what to look for in passengers and sanitation steps for buses themselves.

Gregorio Reyes was a passenger on a bus just back from Zacatecas, about six hours outside of Mexico City.  He told CBS 11 that in the interior of Mexico he saw people covering their faces as they went about their business, but at Zacatecas there were no issues.

Nonetheless, with nearly 90 swine flu deaths in Mexico another woman on the bus was taking no chances.  And the Obama Administration today declared a national health emergency.

Dallas County Health Director Zachary Thompson and his crew are on multiple statewide conference calls daily.  He says international communication designed to discover this kind of crisis seemingly failed.

The three cases locally are still being tested for confirmation.

The three people are not related to each other, nor are they related to the two boys diagnosed with the flu in early April, who then traveled to Dallas from their home in San Diego after they were found to be not contagious of the flu strain.

Because of the age of the 7-year-old health officials are assessing if there is a risk to any local schools, and will be alerting schools Monday to determine if further steps will need to be taken.

No other local counties are reporting cases of the swine flu.  Tarrant County Health officials told CBS 11 they "remain watchful and along with regional, state and national partners are involved in regional surveillance activities."
