Protestors Say Dallas Beating Was A Hate Crime

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

Stop the hate.  That's the message some in the Dallas gay and lesbian community want to get across.

One group took to the streets of Dallas Friday night to get their message out after a gay man was the victim of an alleged hate crime back in the summer.

42-year-old Jimmy Lee Dean was found beaten on July 17 near Cedar Springs and Throckmorton.  Three months later the local gay community is speaking out, saying enough is enough.

Event organizers are putting their message on signs, in hopes of gathering support for their cause. They say crimes against their community should not be tolerated.

Jonathan Gunter and Bobby Singleton were arrested and charged in the attack on Dean.  Police say the two allegedly yelled sexually oriented slurs toward Dean, calling it a hate crime.  The Dallas District Attorney's office is classifying the case as an aggravated assault, a charge this community wants changed.
