DHA Boss May Get Raise Following CBS 11 Story
by Jack Fink
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
Current chair of the Dallas Housing Authority, Betty Culbreath, now questions whether Executive Director Ann Lott is paid fairly.
One day after our story showed a dramatic difference between Lott's compensation and an offer made to her one-time replacement, Culbreath has asked the agency to conduct a market survey.
Culbreath said, "The only real way to judge what a job's value is to go out in the marketplace and get some comparisons."
After much controversy, the board last week changed its mind and voted to extend Lott's contract.
But its terms are far less than those offered by the agency's former chairman Guy Brignon to the man he wanted to replace Lott.
In this letter, Brignon offered the director of Dallas' Housing Department, Jerry Killingsworth, a $200,000 salary, a $10,000 bonus, an $800 dollar a month car allowance and a term life insurance policy.
The offer angered Lott's supporters, including Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price. "I guess I'm a little incensed," he said.
Lott now makes $170,000 and receives no bonus.
Her car allowance was less than $200 a month, but now, Culbreath says the board has already decided to raise the car allowance to $600 a month. Lott also does receive a life insurance policy.
Culbreath said, "So if in fact that Ms. Lott is not compensated at the rate she should, I will go back and converse with board members and make sure that is corrected."
No word yet on how long it will take to conduct the market survey.
Through a spokeswoman, Lott has declined comment.
Brignon has called the job offer to Killingsworth water under the bridge. Killingsworth hasn't returned my call.
