Mavs Hold On To Top Grizzlies 106-101

DALLAS (AP) ― Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points over the first three quarters, then saw his teammates take control in the fourth to carry the Dallas Mavericks to a 106-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

Nowitzki asked for more help from his teammates after the last game and certainly got it. Six other Mavericks scored in double-figures, with Jason Terry scoring 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter. He sealed the victory with four free throws in the final 20.6 seconds. Nowitzki was 0 for 2 in the final period.

Erick Dampier had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Jason Kidd had 10 points and 10 assists, Josh Howard and J.J. Barea had 11 points and Shawn Marion had 10 as the Mavericks pulled out a split of a four-game homestand, and avenged a 16-point loss in Memphis earlier this month.

Zach Randolph had 27 points and 14 rebounds and Rudy Gay had 22 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Grizzlies, who had won three straight.

Randolph appeared headed to a third straight 30-point game by making nine straight shots and scoring 21 of Memphis' first 39 points, helping the Grizzlies lead by as many as 10. Then the Mavericks started double-teaming him and the easy baskets he had been scoring became a lot tougher.

Dallas held Randolph without a basket from 9:42 of the second quarter to 9:43 of the fourth. By then, the Mavericks had taken control.

Nowitzki powered a 14-3 run early in the third quarter that took Dallas from trailing by four to leading by seven. He hit his first five shots of the third quarter and looked ready to dominate late the way Randolph did early.

But, he didn't. Nowitzki turned into a complementary player either by coincidence or by design. Regardless, his teammates came through.

Terry and Howard combined for 20 of the Mavericks' 27 points in the fourth quarter. Dampier had only one basket, but it was a biggie -- a layup after Memphis got within 97-96 with 2:20 left. Nowitzki actually assisted on that one.

Nowitzki, still playing with a huge bandage on his shooting elbow because of a gruesome injury last week, was 10 of 16. He didn't shoot a free throw for the first time all season.

Notes: Memphis fell to 1-14 at American Airlines Center, having won here only in November 2005. ... Kidd tied Tim Hardaway for the seventh-most career 3-pointers. ... Dallas' backup big man Drew Gooden didn't dress because of back spasms. ... Mavs owner Mark Cuban won't be joining the team in Denver, but it has nothing to do with avoiding Kenyon Martin or Nuggets fans. His kids are on winter break so he's headed to his vacation home in the Cayman Islands. He'll miss the team's games during spring break, too.

  • TONIGHT'S KEY RUN: Memphis led 61-59 with 9:21 to play in the 3rd quarter. Dallas then went on a 14-3 run through the 4:59 mark of the period to take a 73-64 lead.

NOTES

  • Drew Gooden did not dress (back spasms).
  • For the 1st time since 4/5/09 (vs. PHO), 7 Mavericks scored in double figures. Jason Terry led the Mavs with 23 points off the bench. Dirk Nowitzki (20), Erick Dampier (13), JJ Barea and Josh Howard (11), Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion (10) also scored at least 10 each.
  • All 5 starters finished in double figures for the 2nd time this season (2-0, also at DET, 11/15).
  • Terry's is his 7th 20-point game off the bench this season. He also single-handedly outscored the opposing bench (14) for the 6th time this season (3-3 record).
  • Erick Dampier recorded his 7th double-double, surpassing his total for the entire 2008-09 season (6). He finished 13 points and 10 rebounds (9 DR) in 35 minutes. Dampier averages 12.3 rebounds over the last 4 games.
  • After making 2 3-pointers tonight, Jason Kidd is now in 7th place all-time on the NBA's 3-pointers made list. He passed Tim Hardaway (1,542) and now has made 1,543 3s for his career.
  • Kidd added 10 assists to his 10 points for his 9th double-double of the season. He and Nowitzki now both have 9 double-doubles to lead the Mavs.
  • Memphis blocked an opponent season-low tying 1 shot (also @ LAL, 10/30).
  • Dallas improved to 7-0 when shooting 50% FG (.524, 43-82 FGs, 6-17 3FGs) and 13-1 when dishing 25 assists.
  • Tonight's attendance was 20,195 fans (19,200 capacity). The Mavs have sold out 333 consecutive regular season games at AAC. Dallas currently owns the longest running sellout streak in the NBA. Dallas has sold out all 41 games in each of the past seven seasons.
