Yet Another Live-Music Venue Closes In Deep Ellum
by Jay Gormley
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
A Dallas music landmark is closing its doors at the end of March.
The Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum filed for bankruptcy. The venue has hosted such acts as John Mayer, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Eminem and Robert Plant, as well as some of the biggest alternative bands.
Many critics and fans alike call the Gypsy Tea Room the best place in Dallas to see live music.
"It feels like a place that has been there 50 or 60 years. It feels like a place where you want to hear music. Every place you stand, you can see. Every place you stand, you can hear. It really has a warmth and a generosity about it," said Dallas Observer's music critic Robert Wilonsky.
When it finally closes on March 31, the Gypsy Tea Room will be the third live-music venue in Deep Ellum to shut down in the past two years.
The "Gypsy" first opened its doors in March of 1998.
While Wilonsky is sad to see the Gypsy Tea Room close, he has stronger feelings about the way the city is handling future plans for Deep Ellum. Wilonsky says the city is ignoring the potential of the neighborhood and instead, wants to change it into another "West Village."
The long-time film and music writer says by doing so, the city will eliminate Deep Ellum's eclectic charm. You can hear more of Wilonsky's criticism of the future of Deep Ellum by
