DPD Meets With Local Leaders Over Deadly Shooting

Marianne Martinez
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Some community leaders are expressing their anger about a Dallas police officer shooting and killing an unarmed man.

The group met with Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle after lunch.

There are apparently two very different stories about what lead up to the deadly shooting. DPD officials say the shooting was justified, but community leaders claim an innocent man was killed.

The shooting happened last week after 31-year-old Derrick Jones was involved in a traffic accident.  It's agreed that a DPD officer pulled Jones over, but that's where the stories take different turns.

Dallas police say Jones was fighting and hitting the officer, who said it reached a point where he felt he would lose consciousness. Saying he feared for his life, the officer shot Jones.

According to community leaders there are witnesses that say Jones never touched the officer.  "We want to make sure those witnesses are involved in the grand jury process and make sure they are safe and not intimidated," said Civil Rights Activist Rev. Ronald Wright.

DPD officials declined to comment on today's meeting.

There is police dash cam video of the entire incident.  Police say they will not release, or show it, during the meeting and will wait to show it during the grand jury hearing.
