Dallas Chase Ends When Police Shoot Suspect

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A shooting in Dallas early Tuesday morning sparked a police chase that ended when officers opened fire on the accused gunman.

The incident began when shots were fired on Whitehurst Drive in Dallas. Police officers chased the suspect to a nearby apartment complex on Larmanda Street.

Undercover officers were in the area when shots were first fired. They did not witness the shooting, but did see the suspect leave the area. They followed his pickup truck until patrol officers picked up the pursuit.

The suspect lost control of his vehicle and crashed in the parking lot of an apartment complex. However, he still did not surrender to police. "As he got off his vehicle, he did point his handgun at the officers, and the officers responded by shooting the suspect," said Sgt. Gil Cerda with the Dallas Police Department.

The suspect was shot twice. Officials did not say if he ever returned fire, but police did recover his weapon from the scene.

No officers were injured.

Police have not released the names of those involved, but both the suspect and the original shooting victim are being treated at Baylor University Medical Center. They are expected to survive.

There is no word yet on what sparked the original shooting, however, a second suspect is still on the loose.
