Dallas To Arlington Commute May Soon Be Faster

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
North Texans daily commute on I-30 from Dallas to Arlington may move faster just in time for the 2011 Super Bowl at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium.
Lifelong Arlington resident Vickie Carter said, "I'm all for speeding up the traffic, because if you've been stuck over here on I-30 and it's 100-degree heat, it's awful."
Now regional transportation planners with the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) want to ask TXDOT to speed up by five years the planned managed toll lane on I-30 from Downtown Dallas to the Tarrant County line near Arlington.
It would cost $80 million and allow an extra 20,000 vehicles on that stretch of highway.
To ride in the HOV lane now, motorists need at least two people, but under this plan, Michael Morris of NCTCOG said, "It permits you as a single occupant user to also get in that lane, but you're going to have to pay a toll to accomplish that. The commuter in the corridor would have more choices to make if they want to get some place in a hurry."
Sharon Moore said she tries to avoid I-30, but supports the plan. "I think that's wonderful. I think they should do that."
On Thursday, the Regional Transportation Council will vote whether to ask the state to accelerate the managed lane project.
TXDOT will have the final say.
