Why Weren't Hydrants Working During A Dallas Fire?

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― There were questions Wednesday night about fire hydrants that weren't working while firefighters battled a two-alarm arson fire in east Dallas.

The Dallas Water Utilities Department said Thursday the main line valve that services the hydrants closest to the fire had been turned off. The fire happened at a vacant apartment complex at I-30 and Ferguson Road.

But water crews say they did not shut off the valve, and they don't know who did.

"It's a very big concern," Dallas Water Utilities spokesman Charles Stringer said. "It's something that we will be investigating to see how that valve got closed."

Firefighters say because the hydrants didn't work initially, they had to lay hose half a mile away to find water.

The city says another hydrant near their building was working at the time.
