DPD Standoff Allegedly Involved Iraq War Vet

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A high-speed chase and shootout with Dallas police ended with a kidnapping suspect injured by officer gunfire.

Police were trying to arrest 26-year-old Losten Scott Jr. in Northwest Dallas, for kidnapping his girlfriend last week, when a high sped pursuit began and ended when the suspect wrecked his SUV near Fair Park.

Police cornered the man in a vacant lot when they exchanged gunfire. The suspect was hit by police gunfire and wounded. Chopper 11 video showed Scott lying on the ground after the chase ended.

As many as eight Dallas police officers fired at the suspect.

Witnesses told CBS 11 News that they were worried about being hit by the numerous shots exchanged. "I was just trying to save my life and go inside," explained George Morales. "I was afraid the guy would run to this house, because we were working inside and it was open."

Despite lying face up on the ground, police were concerned that Scott wouldn't surrender and approached him with the DPD armored vehicle. Scott was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

Scott is an Iraq war veteran. One of his friends, who did not wish to be identified, described him as "always at war. He wasn't afraid to die and whatever happened, happened."

Two schools were locked down during the chase. No officers were injured.

When Scott hit a power pole and wrecked his SUV power to dozens of residents was knocked out. Power has since been restored to the area.
