CBS 11 News has learned more information about the deaths of a Dallas mother and her young daughter.
According to police, Gary Green killed his wife and stepdaughter, and then tried to kill his two stepsons.
The murders happened in the 3800 block of Morning Springs Trail in Oak Cliff.
Lovetta Armstead, a substitute teacher for the Arlington ISD, had just gotten home with her 6-year-old daughter, Jazzman Montgomery. She had dropped her two sons off at church.
After arriving at the home, Green attacked and stabbed his wife several times, then turned on his stepdaughter.
After attacking the mother and daughter, Green went to the church where Armstead had dropped off her nine and 12-year-old sons. Green picked up the boys and took them home where he stabbed the 9-year-old in the stomach. The boy is recovering at Children's Medical Center. His older brother wasn't attacked.
Dallas police say the boys somehow talked Green out of killing them. According to detectives, as soon as Green fled from the scene the uninjured 12-year-old ran next door for help.
Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle says after Green left the house he tried to overdose on prescription medication. "He called his mother and she encouraged him to surrender," the chief explained.
Tuesday morning Armstead's distraught sister stopped by the house. She was crying and screaming "Wait a minute what happened. I just got a phone call that told me that this had happened." The woman was quickly taken inside one of the neighbors' homes.
Shocked neighbors say Green was friendly and always tried to help them out. "They were good neighbors. If something happened we would tell them. And that day my house was burglarized he came with me and sat with me until the police came and now I'm at a loss," neighbor Debra Adams said puzzled.
Police say Green was upset because his wife had filed for divorce. He turned himself in to police just after 2am Tuesday and is being held on capital murder charges.
