McKinney Fundraiser Held For Family Of Killed Mom
McKINNEY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Friends and family of Denise Stephens gathered Sunday night in McKinney for a fundraiser.
Stephens was beaten to death with a baseball bat the day after Mother's Day. Her ex-husband Brent Stephens is charged with her murder.
The Stephens' three girls, ages 3, 7 and 9, now live with their maternal grandmother, Betty Seymour. Organizers say they just wanted to do something to help her.
"It showed me that there are people who truly cared what happened, and that they're behind us and they're there to help us," Seymour said.
The fundraiser was held at the Cadillac Pizza Pub. The establishment contributed 20 percent of Sunday night's proceeds to the fund. More than a hundred people helped with the goal.
The mood was upbeat as local musicians Jim Suhler and Mike Morgan performed.
"It's bittersweet," said Lauri Miles, one of Denise Stephens' friends. "I miss her. I really miss her."
Every dollar counted to make the lives of three young girls a little better.
"It will help a great deal," Seymour said.
