The Dallas Mavericks battled the Golden State Warriors Wednesday night in the NBA Playoffs, but a legal battle is brewing between a Mavs fan and Coach Don Nelson.
The fan is challenging Coach Nelson, for hundreds of thousands of dollars, in a court of law.
Larry Rolle is cheering for the Dallas Mavericks, but rooting against the former Mavericks coach. Rolle is challenging Coach Nelson for hundreds of thousands of dollars in a court of law.
"I've had bad feelings against Don for a long time," Rolle told CBS 11 News.
Rolle wants his $300,000 invest back in the International Shootout. The company sponsored basketball shooting contests for amateur players.
Rolle claims Nelson repeatedly promised to deliver the NBA and Nike as sponsors, but never did. "I'm an attorney; I've owned my own law firm for quite a long time. I'm not stupid, if he'd said, 'Look I'll talk to the NBA, or I'll discuss it with Nike, if we can do it we will.' He said, "I will deliver."
For his part, Nelson says he found out about the lawsuit just Wednesday. "Actually I thought we went out of business a long time ago. I really don't know much about it. I was kind of surprised myself," Nelson said.
The flyer Rolle showed CBS 11 News has Nelson's picture and name all over it. Rolle says after years without the NBA's or Nike's sponsorship his 'shootout' ultimately fouled out.
Despite having the flyer, Rolle says he never had a written contract with Nelson, just a verbal agreement and Rolle says he thought that was enough.
