Elderly Dallas Man Fights Back Against Attackers
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
An elderly man fought back against a group of thugs and won! The incident happened in a quiet east Dallas neighborhood. The motive for the attack is not known, but the victim insisted that it was unprovoked, and it should have everyone who lives in the Lakewood area concerned.
John Vaughn was sitting in his car, only a few feet away from his home around 10 p.m. Friday night, when a group of young men drove past. "They were looking for trouble and looking for an easy make," he said.
The 71-year-old retired financial consultant explained that the men pulled alongside him on Wabash Circle and tried to attack. "As they passed me, they hit the sideview mirror with a bat or some big stick," Vaughn said, describing the attack on his car.
With his sideview mirror damaged and the men shouting obscenities, Vaughn rammed their car in an effort to draw the attention of neighbors. He said, "I thought all the lights would come on and people would come out of their houses, but nobody came."
The men eventually drove away. Now, Vaughn is letting his neighbors know about what he believes was an attempted carjacking or robbery. It is a crime that is uncommon in the Lakewood area, and one that Vaughn believes would have been more serious had he not decided to fight back.
"I think they thought I was coming at them for another smack," Vaughn said.
Vaughn saved some of the pieces of the other vehicle after the men drove away. He believes the car was an older model Chevy Sedan, and described the attackers as between three to five men all in their 20s.
The worst part of the experience, Vaughn said, was the initial hit with the bat. "The bat scared me," he said. "If anything, I'd rather be shot than hit with a bat."
