Tax Free Holiday On Energy Efficient Products
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Texans are being encouraged to be 'energy aware' this Memorial Day weekend. As an incentive shoppers can save money on the purchase of certain new appliances.
During the Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26, energy efficient household appliances carrying the 'Energy Star' label will be tax free.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced ENERGY STAR in 1992 as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
According to energystar.com the typical household spends $1,900 a year on energy bills. With ENERGY STAR products, consumers can save up to 30% or more than $600 per year.
"The Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday rewards Texans for choosing the most energy efficient appliances available and helping conserve the state's vital energy resources," Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said in a press release sent out Monday.
The Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday applies only to the following appliances and household equipment:
- Air conditioners priced less than $6,000
-
Ceiling fans
- Dehumidifiers
-
Dishwashers
-
Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
-
Programmable thermostats
-
Refrigerators priced less than $2,000
-
Clothes washers
To qualify for the sales tax exemption, the Energy Star logo must appear on the appliance, the packaging or the Energy Guide label. The label will show an estimate of how much energy the appliance uses, compare energy use of similar products, and list approximate annual operating costs.
There are two price tags on any new appliance: what you pay to take it home and what you pay for the energy and water it uses. ENERGY STAR qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 1050% less energy and water than standard models.
To encourage customers to buy energy efficient products, ENERGY STAR partners occasionally sponsor special offers, such as rebates on qualified products. Find out more about eligible federal tax credits, special offers and rebates.
