Family Killed In Mexico Were On Mission Trip

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

A journey to help people less fortunate on thanksgiving turns tragic for a North Texas family.

Seven members of the Madrid family of Waxahachie were killed Thursday when their SUV plunged off an unfinished bridge in Northern Mexico.  The family was on their way to Mexico to do missionary work.

Members of the family have been helping people at a Southwest Dallas food pantry for nearly twenty years.  They were taking food to a family church in Mexico when the crash happened.

Tears and Shock accompanied mourners at their church in Dallas Sunday, shock over three generations of the family drowning because there was no warning that the bridge was incomplete.

Only one person was able to swim out of the vehicle safely.  The family was two miles from their destination.  Many relatives say they believe the accident could have easily been avoided if there were signs or lights on the bridge.

Mexican authorities say they are investigating the crash.

A fund has been set up in the name of Sofia Madrid Rey at Bank of America in Dallas to help defray funeral costs.
