Dallas Firefighter Saves Fellow Firefighter's Life

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A Dallas firefighter says he owes his life to a man who he had never met. But now it looks like Jeff Davis and Ken Ferguson are going to be life-long friends.

Davis was playing soccer at the Blue Sky Sports Center in the Colony on June 25 when his heart stopped and he fell to the floor. At the time, he didn't know that one of the arteries leading to his heart was 100-percent blocked.

Davis said he doesn't remember collapsing. He doesn't remember people yelling, and he doesn't remember Ferguson giving him CPR.

Ferguson and Davis both play soccer at the same club. Davis has played competitive sports at the center over the last six years. They both live in Frisco and they are both Dallas fire fighters. But until that day, they had never met.

Since the fall, doctors have implanted a defibrillator in Davis' chest and inserted two stents in his right artery. His cardiologist says it was sudden cardiac death.

"Effectively he was dead," said Dr. Tony Das, Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. "If he had not gotten CPR, and if he had not gotten the EMS folks to do a shock on him, he would not have survived that."

Dr. Das says the CPR made it possible for Davis' heart to continue pumping blood to his brain. That was long enough for the Colony Police to arrive with an automated external defibrillator.

Davis is expected to be out of work for three weeks and won't be able to keep up with his other jobs. Click here to find out how you can help him and his family.
