Fort Worth Dog Park Best In Show
by Mark Johnson
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ―
Fort Worth is now the proud home of the number one dog park in the country.
"Fort Woof" has only been around for two years, but it's already grabbed the attention of canines, their owners and the editors of Dog Fancy magazine. The magazine named it "best in show."
Dog owner Robert Taylor was at the park Monday morning. "You've got all this vast area you can run around in; you can decide which side you want your dog in--the small side, and the big, and medium."
Taylor admits that he has an ulterior motive when he takes his dog Macy to the park. "She has a lot of energy. So I have to take away some of that energy so when she gets home, she won't tear my yard up."
Fort Worth parks district superintendent Mark Woolsey said, "I look at it as one of the jewels in Fort Worth's crown that make Fort Worth the most livable city, and we're real proud of that."
Jason Smith is one of the people who keeps that jewel polished. He's with the Fort Woof Dog Park Association. He said, "The response to Fort Woof hasn't been wow. It's been bow wow! We probably get about 2,000 people visit this park on average every week."
Dog owner Mary Jorgensen likes the park because it's friendly to those with four legs and two legs. "You can sit at a picnic table. The dogs have lots of room to run. (There is) lots of water to help keep them clean and cool."
Fort Woof is inside Gateway Park. It's on Beach Street, just north of I-30 in East Fort Worth. Click here for the park's website.
