A freight train derailed Saturday along a rural highway in the Texas Panhandle, leaving a trail of twisted metal but not spilling any hazardous materials or causing any injuries.
The derailment happened at 5:34 a.m. about 65 miles east of Amarillo near the Panhandle town of Clarendon, said Texas Department of Public Safety operator Carolyn Wakefield.
BNSF Railway spokesman Joe Faust said nine of the train's 75 cars were involved in the derailment, but none of the cars contained hazardous materials.
Faust said the conductor and engineer on the train weren't injured. The train was headed east to Fort Worth, where BNSF is based.
The train was carrying a variety of cargo, including consumer products, Faust said. He said the cause of the derailment was under investigation.
