Firefighters Work To Stay Cool As Mercury Rises

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Extra firefighters were called in to help battle a house fire near the TCU campus.

The fire started in the garage of a home in the 2700 block of 6th Street Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said it quickly spread to the rest of the house.

As many as 30 firefighters were called to a Fort Worth house fire.  None of the firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, but some crawled out of the home and were doused with water as they rotated crews.

"You are probably going to run 25 to 30 degrees above whatever the temperature is just standing out here in bunker gear," explained Battallion Chief Sam Greif with the Fort Worth Fire Department. "Once you get into a super heated environment -- 800, 900 degrees easily especially as you start getting into the attic space -- the ambient body temperature … let's put it like this: when these guys come out on a 100-degree day and pull their coats off, steam comes off their body like stem coming off cold water."

Everyone inside the home got out safely and other neighbors were evacuated.

Saturday's high reached 104.
