Feds Investigate Gender Discrimination In GCISD

COLLEYVILLE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Federal officials are currently investigating whether or not female student athletes are being discriminated against in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District. The allegations have yet to be proven, but some parents are unhappy with how the investigators are going about their business.

The investigation surrounds the girls softball teams at schools in the district. The complaint alleges that there are fewer athletic participation opportunities for girls due to "more girls teams having required cuts by unequal facilities for the girls softball team, in part due to unequal distribution of booster club funds."

The Department of Education found enough evidence to open the investigation, and officials with their office of civil rights visited Colleyville Heritage High School this week.

This all comes after a Title IX complaint, which is the law the prohibits sex discrimination in schools that receive federal money.

In their trip to Colleyville Heritage High School, CBS 11 News has been told that investigators were even measuring the size of lockers to make sure that girls and boys had equal sports facilities.

Paige Cherry plays on the tennis team at Colleyville Heritage, and said that she has never experienced any discrimination of female athletes at the school. "I really think it's ridiculous because, I think, everything is completely fair," Cherry said. "I've never had any complaints with that. I think we're treated the exact same. Everything is equal."

But while she questions the validity of the allegations, her father is upset that federal investigators tried to interview students without parental knowledge or consent.

The school district has said that they welcome a full inspection of facilities, the first part of what could be a lengthy investigation.
