A 14-year-old Garland middle school student was hit by two cars as he was walking to school Friday morning.
The accident happened around 8:45 a.m. near the intersection of Garland Ave. and Meadow Crest.
Kevin Wilson, who later died from his injuries, attended Bussey Middle School.
The teenager, who was autistic, apparently missed his bus and tried to walk to school. He was crossing a four-lane intersection when he was hit by the vehicles.
A designated cross walk, with a crossing guard, is about one block from where the accident occurred. Officials say Bussey Middle School is about 2-3 blocks from accident scene and the school zone lights were on.
According to authorities the boy somehow walked out in front of a car driven by a woman who tried to swerve, but clipped him with a side mirror. The impact spun the child around into oncoming traffic and a second vehicle ran him over.
A police report confirms that the drivers of the two vehicles were outside of the school zone and weren't speeding. Neither driver was cited.
"From everything that we're being told right now, it looks like it's gonna be the young man's fault," Garland Police Officer Joe Harn told CBS 11 News. "Of him running out into the roadway, was not at a crosswalk, was running kinda diagonal across the roadway, and just simply ran in front of these vehicles and ended up getting hit." The investigation into the accident continues. So far, no charges have been filed.
Since the student was autistic a special bus is provided for his transportation to and from school. Police say it appears that after missing that bus the teen struck out on his own and headed to school.
The Garland School District informed parents about the accident in a letter sent home with students.
