Amphitheater Could Be Added To Fort Worth Park

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ― According to a new study, one of the largest parks in Fort Worth may be moving into the music business. It is part of a plan to rebuild Gateway Park along the Trinity River, on the east side of the city.

Many people know Gateway Park for its nationally recognized dog park. Right now, the dog park's nearest neighbors are softball fields. But that could change.

The City of Fort Worth just finished a study about putting an new amphitheater in the park, on the site of a closed wastewater treatment plant. The study showed that the city is large enough to support the 7,000 seat theater, even with competition from Nokia Theatre and Bass Concert Hall.

The amphitheater would be part of a $50 million renovation of the park area. The money would come from natural gas revenues and, perhaps, a partner.

"This type of venue has a real opportunity for sponsorship," said Randle Harwood, director of Trinity River Vision. "Put a flagship name on it and those folks will help us build it. We think there's money to be raised and this type of venue attracts those dollars."

Soil from other construction would be used to build the berm around the stage.

Doug Williamson is a regular at the dog park who thinks that the idea sounds great. "If it doesn't affect the dog park," he said, "I think it'll be fine. I mean, Fort Worth is a great place to live and a great place to see arts and stuff like that."

The potential impacts of the amphitheater will be discussed in a public meeting next week.
