Hard times have the City of Dallas considering budget cuts that threaten a number of jobs and services.
CBS 11 News has learned that some of the cuts have impacted the security around Former President George W. Bush.
Last week, the Dallas Police Department ended the city funded protection of the former president, in an effort to tighten its financial belt.
The security the former president received, since leaving office, included three tactical officers, each working eight-hour shifts, in addition Secret Service protection. The elimination of the service will save the Dallas Police Department some $300,000 a year.
The police department will still have regular patrols and officials say some increased patrols will be provided, if necessary, around the Bush home on Daria Lane.
The cuts raise questions about whether the former president's security will be compromised, but the Secret Service issued a statement to CBS 11 News that read in part, "DPD will still be visible in its daily interaction with the Secret Service. We reached the agreement as the Secret Service continues to reassess security measures for the former president."
DPD officials declined an on-camera interview request about the decision to end the 24 hour surveillance.
There has been talk of constructing a security gate at the end of Daria Lane, which is currently accessible to the public, but there have been ongoing disputes about who would pay for it.
