Man Arrested In Ohio For 1986 Garland Murder

by Jay Gormley
GARLAND (CBS 11 News) ― A man was arrested Tuesday in Geneva, Ohio for the 1986 rape and murder of a Garland woman.

The suspect is 55-year-old Gerald Edmond Pabst. "He was basically having a beer in a bar earlier afternoon yesterday when he was apprehended," said District Attorney Investigator George Espinoza.

The victim was Galua Crosby. She was bound, raped and shot three times in the head.

But it was Clay Chabot who was first arrested for the crime. He has been sitting in prison for 21 years based on the testimony provided by Pabst. However, Chabot has proclaimed his innocence since the day of his arrest.

"He indicated he was not present when this took place," said Mike Ware of the Conviction Integrity Unit. "His testimony at trial was that he actually lent Mr. Pabst his gun. Mr. Pabst brought the gun the day of the murder."

In 1986, Pabst served time for stealing items from Crosby's home. His sentence was only 30 days in return for his testimony against Chabot.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office decided to revist the case, specifically the involvement of Pabst.

"We went back and looked at his DNA. We had DNA all the way back from 1986," said Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins. "It was determined that Mr. Pabst actually sexually assaulted this woman."

Pabst is back in a Dallas jail now, awaiting trial for murder. Meanwhile, officials are unsure of Chabot's role, if any, in the crime.
