Untreated Sewer Water Dumped In Grapevine Lake

GRAPEVINE (CBS 11 News) ―
The sun is out, temperatures are warm, and that means people are heading to area lakes. With that in mind, CBS 11 News has learned new details about the water in Grapevine Lake that may not sit well with North Texans.
According to a new report there is an average 250,000 gallons of improperly treated sewer water that ends up in the lake. The City of Justin, in Denton County, dumps the sewage into Denton Creek which dumps into Grapevine Lake.
The Justin water treatment facility can legally release some water if it is treated, but inspectors say their levels are way off mark.
The water is first released into Trail Creek before it reaches Grapevine Lake.
Officials with the City of Grapevine say some drinking water is pulled from the lake, and the treatment they do on their end ensures that it's safe.
"The disinfection process and the residual that's maintained throughout the system ensures that there are no bacteriological components in the water that would cause health problems," says Matt Singleton, the Director of Public Works for the City of Grapevine.
The Environmental Protection Agency says if the report is correct it wouldn't be the first time that the City of Justin Water Treatment Facility has violated the clean water act. Currently EPA officials say they are reviewing a possible penalty for the city.
Administrators at the Justin water facility told CBS 11 News they will have no comment until the EPA review is complete.
