DART Adding More Entry, Exit Points On HOV Lanes

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Hundreds of drivers have complained about the headaches caused by the new HOV lanes on Central Expressway in Dallas and Collin counties.
There's only one access point for drivers on the 14-mile stretch of HOV lanes on Central Expressway between LBJ and Bethany Drive in Allen. It's around Park and Parker in Plano.
There are no access points to the HOV lanes in Richardson, and that's been a big problem for residents and many of the 100,000 people who work in the area everyday.
Drivers who've called 911 to report car troubles on the highway have also expressed confusion.
But changes are already on the way.
DART operates and maintains the HOV lanes, and officials say they are listening to complaints. The organization is searching for places to add entry and exit points.
"Had we gone ahead and installed additional access points, had we gone ahead and taken other drastic measures regarding the facility, we would not have been able to guarantee the safety of it," said DART representative Koorosh Olyai.
Drivers have also complained about the 8,000 pylons along the new HOV lanes. When drivers get stuck in the lane, others must drive over the pylons to get out, and then can't get back in.
Now, DART will reduce the number of pylons to improve traffic flow.
