Dangerous Oak Cliff Intersection Draws Concern
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Whether it's speeders along Hampton Road or drivers who roll through stop signs on Perryton, neighbor Judy Brooks will tell you, "It's a big accident waiting to happen. The park is there, and they (drivers) speed in and out of the park."
The intersection of South Hampton Road and Perryton in Oak Cliff is home to Kiest Park, where hundreds of kids play each day. Add in an elementary school, a library and a hospital and neighbors say it's a recipe for disaster.
"We've had a couple of injuries. The children don't mix with the cars," said Perryton resident Richard Watson.
It was less than two weeks ago when a mother and her two young children were struck by a hit and run driver in the intersection of Hampton and Perryton. Neighbors complain that fast cars and drivers distracted by loud music make it a risky proposition for children to cross the street.
"I see kids cross the street to go to the ice cream vendors and their parents don't go with them," said concerned mother Norma Villarreal.
The neighborhood has tried everything from posting warnings to installing new stop signs, but it doesn't seem to work. In just 15 minutes, we witnessed five drivers who blew through the stop signs.
Neighbors say at one point, a police officer routinely patrolled the area, but now they say the officer has been reassigned to other neighborhoods.
Dallas Councilman Dave Neumann represents the neighborhood. Neuman says the city has been working to address the traffic concerns.
