Two Children Injured In Haslet House Fire
By Melissa Newton
HASLET (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A fire destroyed a family's one-story home in Haslet on Friday afternoon, leaving two young children in the hospital. The incident started around 3:00 p.m. in the 100 block of Gammill Drive.
Investigators believe that the fire started in a back room of the house, but even the front porch was charred by the flames.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It is possible that a 3-year-old boy who lived in the home was playing with matches, according to Deputy Duke Major with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office. Major said he heard the boy's mother ask him if he had been playing with matches.
The toddler was flown to Parkland Medical Center in Dallas where he is being treated in the burn unit. His 2-year-old brother was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth for smoke inhalation. He was listed in good condition on Friday night.
According to firefighters, both parents were home at the time of the fire, but they were not injured. But, Major said, the mother was hysterical when he arrived on the scene. "You're in the house and, all of a sudden, you have to rush out. And you don't know if you got everyone out or not," said Major. "And then she just looked around and she had her kids with her, and then her husband came back from around the side. That meant everyone was out."
"Little things in life that happen every day and then huge things like this that should never happen put things in perspective," said Amy Mills, a friend of the family.
An official report from the fire investigator will not be out until next week. In the meantime, the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
