'Hell House' Provides Haunted House Alternative

 Featured Slideshow: Halloween, Hollywood-Style

by Kaushal Patel
CEDAR HILL (CBS 11 News) ― For the past 17 years, some members from the Trinity Church in Cedar Hill have put together the 'Hell House.' They call it an alternative to traditional haunted houses, but some believe that it goes too far.

Once inside the 'Hell House,' a tour guide dressed as a demon walks visitors through a maze of nine scenes that bring to light some serious issues.

One scene features a graphic abortion. Another touches on drugs and family violence. A third scene recreates the Virginia Tech massacre. It's creating a controversy.

According to the director of these scenes, Carlos Ortiz, the actual goal of the 'Hell House' is to empower people with information. "We make a choice to put on 'Hell House' and we receive backlash for that sometimes, but all of us have a right to make a choice," he said. "And yes, there are people that don't like the fact they think that we are hitting, but I think when they walk through that they'll really catch the spirit of what we're doing. It's really to encourage people, and that's why we really encourage youth leaders or youth pastors and all of DFW to come on out."

The 'Hell House' opened on Friday night and runs through Halloween night.
