DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The small town of Hillsboro, south of Dallas and Fort Worth, is reeling after the murder of a 12-year-old girl.
Hill County Sheriff's investigators say her 13-year-old sister was also stabbed, and is in ICU at Parkland Hospital. She has undergone surgery and is expected to recover from her physical wounds. However, the emotional wounds will prove much harder to heal. "It's just been terrible," says a family member at the hospital who didn't want to be identified.
The family member says the girls father spent much of the day at a funeral home making arrangements for Kelsey Leanne Jeter. Her mother called 911 admitting to the stabbing Friday night.
"We put her on our prayer list this morning the family and her," explains Miriam Pharris who says things like this just don't happen in her town "We are thinking just thinking about the family."
Investigators say 32-year-old Debra Janelle Jeter had picked up the girls from their father's house and taken them to an abandoned farm house on U.S. 77. The Sheriff's office says that's where she slashed their throats.
They found the younger daughter dead -- and airlifted the 13-year-old to Parkland.
Sheriff Jeffery Lyon knows the family. He says the couple was going through a divorce and in the middle of custody battle.
"This may have been a retaliatory murder basically revenge because she didn't have the children," explains Dr. Sylvia Gearing. Dr. Gearing is a psychologist out of Plano. She has worked with mothers who want to kill their kids.
"What we know about most mother's who kill their kids is there is some wide standing history of instability, emotional and mental disorders." says Dr. Gearing.
Jeter is charged with murder and attempted capital murder. Her bail is set at $1.5 million.
