How You Can Help Local Hurricane Evacuees
(CBS 11 / TXA 21)
Local government agencies have released guidelines on how people can help evacuees relocating to North Texas because of Hurricane Ike.
Dallas and Fort Worth officials are asking that people interested in volunteering register through the Volunteer Center of North Texas at either (866) 797-8268 or on their website
http://www.volunteernorthtexas.org. The Volunteer Center says they need 400 people to volunteer on Monday.
Donations of money in both cities can be made to the North Texas Food Bank at
http://www.ntxfoodbank.org. They do not need donations of food at this time.
The Salvation Army says at this stage donated goods are not needed for the relief effort. There is a possibility that after the hurricane makes landfall, evacuees in the Metroplex will be able to return home. In this event, donated goods may not be needed locally.
The Salvation Army also says monetary donations are needed to help fund expenses related to providing disaster relief. Donations may be made by calling (800) SAL-ARMY or going to their website at
http://www.uss.salvationarmy.org/uss/www_uss.nsf.
Residents are asked not to drop donations at the Dallas Convention Center shelter location. Additionally, they are asked to not come to the Convention Center to offer volunteer assistance. Donations and volunteering should be routed through the agencies suggested above, or by contacting your favorite local charity.
In Denton County, they are
preparing to activate up to four shelters in cooperation with the American Red Cross. These shelters will provide temporary housing for persons who are transported to Denton County via official evacuation buses and aircraft arriving to the North Texas area.
In preparation for addressing the numerous needs, the United Way of Denton County is accepting checks or cash donations to their Disaster Relief Fund at (940) 566-2688 or at http://www.unitedwaydenton.org.
Cash donations can also be made to the Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
