Fort Worth 8-Liner Raid Targets Illegal Gambling
by Steve Pickett
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ―
Police say that illegal gambling is a problem across all of North Texas, but deputies were cracking down on Thursday in far east Fort Worth. That's where officials raided an 8-liner operation early in the afternoon.
Several 8-liners, slot machine video games, were seized in the raid. Three people were arrested.
A sign near the location's door asks that visitors ring the doorbell to gain entry, and warns that only private members will be allowed inside the building. Surveillance cameras monitored the door before investigators took them away.
Undercover officers gained entry and found illegal activitiy behind the closed door.
According to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department, Jerry Michael Chance was running the operation. He was paying out people in cash, which is illegal.
Terry Grisham of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department explained why authorities are being so hard on this type of operation. "This is far from a victimless crime," he said. "We have had armed robberies conducted in these gaming rooms because there are large amounts of cash, and crooks will go where the cash is. So, there is absolutely a lot more than jaywalking going on here."
