Immigrant Supporters Plan Weekend Marches
by Steve Pickett
NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 News) ―
Supporters of the controversial "guest worker" immigration plan intend to hold two big marches in North Texas on Sunday--one in Dallas and one in Fort Worth.
Organizers expect thousands of people to show up for each march. Hector Flores is president of the local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC. He said, "We want to put our best foot forward and show America that we're here to help you become even greater."
Organizers have asked participants to wear white to symbolize peace. They've also asked marchers to bring U.S. flags.
Last week's student protests stirred public backlash, in part because so many waved the flags of Mexico and El Salvador.
Robert Rivera sits on the Arlington City Council. He said, "The presence of the American flag is absolutely paramount. And the American flag is the flag we should hold up, and hold up proudly."
If these marches will showcase political power, next Monday, the plan is to show economic power. Protestors are urged to halt all consumer spending: no restaurants, no retail, not even gasoline for cars.
