Irving Cracks Down On Dangerous Rental Properties
IRVING (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The City of Irving is cracking down on rental properties with potentially dangerous conditions. However, this zero-tolerance policy is upsetting the management of one Irving apartment complex, that claims they are losing tenants due to harrassment from the city.
It is not hard to find tenants who are leaving the Vista Del Lago apartment complex. Management said that 14 tenants have moved out over the past week.
"I was told it's getting demolished in a few months," said tenant Matthew Pool.
"They are being told by the city that my properties are going to be demolished and that it's probably going to happen by the end of this month," said apartment manager Joann Hernandez. "No, it is not!"
"Nothing like that has been reported to us," said Teresa Adrian with the City of Irving Code Enforcement.
According to the City of Irving's code compliance director, if tenants are leaving the apartment complex, it has nothing to do with a potential sale of the property.
"If you check those apartments," explained tenant Rodrigo Esquivel," they're nasty!"
CBS 11 News did check out the Irving apartment complex and found raw sewage running out of a pipe and onto the grass. The city has found 30 code violations at the complex.
Esquivel is one of the residents who are leaving the complex. "It still leaks a lot of water. Ceiling is coming down," Esquivel said of his apartment.
"Even with the windows closed, our neighbors, their house smells in the back rooms," said tenant Bethany Menter.
But Vista Del Lago is not the only Irving property that is facing problems. According to the City of Irving, dozens of locations have potentially dangerous conditions. One complex called Kings Manor is now vacant after so many code violations forced an order for the building to be demolished.
Vista Del Lago has until August to make repairs.
